Hart NPI Extends Cycle

Now that Exit Wounds by Wendy Graf and Confederates by Suzanne Bradbeer have closed their LA productions, we want to thank everyone who has made this amazing year possible. A lot has been accomplished!

1,243 playwrights participated by submitting scripts! That led to 23 Semi-Finalists, 8 Finalists, and 4 Bronze Medallion Winners. The Bronze Winners received readings at 59E59 Theaters in New York July 12-15 as part of our Jeremy Nussbaum New Play Reading Series. These included the two Silver Winners and Find & Sign by Wendy MacLeod, and Queen by Madhuri Shekar.

Then Hart NPI was on to Los Angeles where the two Silver Medallion Winners were produced in rotating rep at Grove Theater Center in Burbank. Both productions were directed by Christopher Hart with set and costumes by Leonard Ogden; lights by David Darwin; and sound by Hunter Stephenson. The sets and the shows couldn’t have been more different so the changeovers were always a major undertaking.

We were excited by the number of people who came to see both shows and that they loved the shows and the process. Over and over we heard: “I love both shows but they’re so different. I don’t know how you’re going to choose.”

In a very short time, we’ll announce which play is going to receive the inaugural Hart NPI Gold Medallion. Meanwhile, we want to let you know that through this first year, we’ve discovered that a 12 month cycle is just too short to accomplish everything we want to do. So we’re extending our schedule a bit and working to expand the Hart NPI to an 18 month cycle. The extra months will make sure we can give the necessary time and attention to each winning script.

We’re working to create the new schedule and will announce it this Spring. And that will include directions on when the next submission window will be and how to submit a script.
