Bronze Medallion Winners Chosen
We are very excited to announce the first round of winners in the Inaugural Moss Hart & Kitty Carlisle Hart New Play Initiative. These four plays will be featured in readings July 12-15
at 59E59 Theaters as part of our Jeremy Nussbaum Play Reading Series.
These plays were selected out of 1,243 submissions from 44 states and 5 countries!
Two of them will go on to have productions at Grove Theater Center in Burbank, California in the Fall and one of those will return to 59E59 Theaters for its Off-Broadway premiere next Spring.
The four plays are:
Exit Wounds By Wendy Graf
What do you do with the rest of your life, when someone you love has committed the horrific act of a school shooting? The Sadowski family, never able to explain the act, hold onto their own guilt, afraid that they might miss the signs again. Now the mother and surviving brother try to come together and save the next generation from the painful past.
Confederates By Suzanne Bradbeer
A young and ambitious reporter uncovers a compromising photo of the daughter of a candidate for president. An older colleague urges him to publish it immediately while the daughter and his conscience tell him to bury it. In the end, he must decide if it’s a legitimate story and whether such a distinction is even relevant for our multi-platform and relentless news cycles.
Find & Sign By Wendy MacLeod
Set in the New York City music industry, Find and Sign takes us through the bumpy romance between an on-the-rise music executive and an idealistic public school teacher. When one of the teacher’s students turns out to be a gifted young hip-hop artist, their tentative romance is complicated by a tug-of-war over the student’s future.
Queen By Madhuri Shekar
PhD candidates Sanam and Ariel have spent the better part of the last decade exhaustively researching vanishing bee populations across the globe. Just as these close friends are about to publish a career-defining paper, Sanam stumbles upon an error in their calculations, which could cause catastrophic damage to their reputations, careers, and friendship.
The Hart NPI Reading Series is named in honor of the beloved entertainment lawyer Jeremy Nussbaum. Jeremy’s commitment to young artists, new writers, and theater start-ups was extraordinary. He believed in the theater and his wisdom laid the groundwork for many successes.
